January 2014 Vahid Aref defended his thesis entitled “Spatial Coupling in Channel and Source Coding.” The committee consisted of Stephan ten Brink, Dan Costello, Emre Telatar, Ruediger Urbanke (advisor), and Michael Gastpar as president.

January 2014 Marc Vuffray defended his thesis entitled “The Cavity Method in Coding Theory.” The committee consisted of Pascal Vontobel, Andi Loeliger, Misha Chertkov, Nicolas Macris (advisor), Ruediger Urbanke (advisor), and Emre Telatar as president.

January 2014 Rüdiger Urbanke and his Qualcomm colleague Tom Richardson received the 2014 IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal “For fundamental contributions to coding theory, iterative information processing, and applications.”

October 2011 Emmanuel Abbe (LTHI) receives the “Fondation Latsis Internationale” Prize for his thesis A New Approach to Wireless Networks.

September 2011 Christine Neuberg (LTHC) receives her EPFL PhD degree.
July 2011 Professor Ruediger Urbanke and his Qualcomm colleague Tom Richardson received the 2011 Koji Kobayashi Award “for developing the theory and practice of transmitting data reliably at rates approaching channel capacity.”
May 2011: Amin Karbasi (LTHC/LCAV) co-author with Reza Parhizkar receives the Best Student Paper Award at ICASSP 2011
for their paper Calibration in circular ultrasound tomography devices.

April 2011: Ayfer Özgür (LTHI/ARNI) received the “2010 EPFL doctorate award” for her thesis entitled “Fundamental limits and optimal operation in large wireless networks”; for establishing how the capacity of self-organizing wireless networks scale with their population, and finding new communication schemes that approach this capacity.
January 2011: Rudiger Urbanke (LTHC) and Christina Fragouli (ARNI) are awarded the European FP7 grant for 3 years for 1 post-doc.
