**February 2014 ** ** Alla Merzakreeva**  defended his thesis entitled "Spatial Coupling in Channel and Source Coding." The committee consisted of Urs Niesen, Ayfer Ozgur, Olivier Leveque (advisor), Emre Telatar (advisor),  and Ola Svensson as president. \\

**January 2014 ** ** Vahid Aref**  defended his thesis entitled "Spatial Coupling in Channel and Source Coding." The committee consisted of Stephan ten Brink, Dan Costello, Emre Telatar,  Ruediger Urbanke (advisor), and Michael Gastpar as president. \\

**January 2014 ** ** Marc Vuffray**  defended his thesis entitled "The Cavity Method in Coding Theory." The committee consisted of Pascal Vontobel, Andi Loeliger, Misha Chertkov, Nicolas Macris (advisor), Ruediger Urbanke (advisor), and Emre Telatar as president. \\

**January 2014 ** ** Rüdiger Urbanke** and his Qualcomm colleague Tom Richardson received the 2014 IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal “For fundamental contributions to coding theory, iterative information processing, and applications.” \\
